So I normally read a lot more than four books in a month but I was still reeling from a loss as June kicked off, and I also happened to be reading two fairly large books (one being 640 pages :P) so I'm cutting myself some slack.
Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros - Yay
Yep. I jumped on board the Fourth Wing bandwagon. And I'm not upset about it. Have I read better? Yes. Have I read worse? Absolutely. IMO, the storyline and characters are worth the hype. As far as young female protagonists go, I like Violet. And obviously I love Xaden, secrets and all. The story line was pretty good and it made me cry at least once which usually earns a 5-star rating in my Goodreads.
This one didn't make the 5 star cut though, I had to knock it down to 4 because it drrraaaggggeed on and there were just too many things that felt thrown in haphazardly. It's broken up into two parts and almost the entire first part could've been summed up in a couple chapters.
Overall, though, I would recommend. Good story, especially if you made it through Fourth Wing. I'm glad I was a little late to the bandwagon because I'm not chomping at the bit for Onyx Storm, but by the time it is released in January I'll be excited to pick it up.
Cruel Prince by Holly Black - NAY
UGH! I fell victim to the Booksta bad boys gang and picked this one up just for a "enemies to lovers" trope. I absolutely regret it. The entire read was painful and yet I kept going.
I think Jude might actually be my least favorite character I've ever found in a book. The story feels like it's jumping all over the place and yet going nowhere at the same time. I want to like Cardan. I do. But I feel like I'm forcing it. And a tail? Really?
Wicked King by Holly Black - IDK
Yes. I kept going. I felt like I owed it to myself to see what happened next and this book was rated higher in Goodreads so I went in with a little hope. That hope was crushed.
Honestly I don't really know whether to put it as Yay or Nay. It's almost worth it to continue the story. I hate Jude even more than in the first book. But I like Cardan a little more and at least there's a little more romance which was what I picked up the first one for.
But the story itself was even more messy than The Cruel Prince. So I'll have to leave this one up to your discretion. Keep going or save yourself the disappointment.
The Wager by David Grann - YAYYY!
My only 5-star book this month, it was SOOO GOOD! Now, I know nonfiction isn't everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I'm fascinated by true stories that sound like fiction. I also like to read nonfiction at the same time as fiction because it almost feels like working out a different muscle that helps in my own writing.
Anyway, even if you have absolutely no interest in nonfiction, this book is great. For me it was a literal page turner. Things for the Wager kept going from bad to worse and I couldn't wait to see what happens next. It was crazy reading about how the navies operated back then. They were seriously worse than pirates.
Absolutely recommend - 1000%
